The dynamic phase of rapid development in Information Technology has brought focus of IITs toward providing well-equipped infrastructure to its students for their strong background in basic sciences as well as interdisciplinary areas of science and technology. The conduct of Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM) comes under the same context, which extract crème students out of the gamut of students applying to study in the institutes of national importance. This article will elaborate on the same.
The sale of Application Forms and Information Brochure for JAM starts at the end of November every year and is available at all identified branches of Canara Bank all over India or can be availed via post from IIT, Kharagpur. Online registration process requires you to access the Web site http://jam.iitkgp.ac.in to fill the application forms.
JAM is conducted in the start of May every year and the results being announced at the end of this month.
Eligibility criteria
JAM candidates, who have at least 55 percent aggregate marks in General/OBC Category (50 percent aggregate marks for SC/ST and PD category candidates), taking into consideration all subjects, including languages and subsidiaries, for all the three years combined, are entitled to apply for the exam.
For the candidates who have letter grades/CGPA (in place of percentage of marks); respective admitting institute decides on the equivalent percentage of marks.
Admission procedure involves submission of a physical fitness certificate granted by a registered medical practitioner in the prescribed form. It also requires candidates to pass through a physical fitness test conducted by a medical board of the admitting institute. If a candidate is found physically unfit to pursue his course of education, his admission may stand canceled.
There are various M.Sc. (Two year) / M.Sc.-Ph.D. Dual Degree and other post-B.Sc. programs offered by IITs for the admissions on the basis of JAM score.

Two-year M.Sc. programs in Applied Statistics and Informatics, Applied Geology, Applied Geophysics, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics.
M.Sc.-Ph.D. Dual Degree programs in Energy, Physics, Biotechnology, and Operations Research.
