National Entrance Examination for Design (NEED) is conducted by the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, as a nodal agency on behalf of the participating institutes for admissions to the programs in design at undergraduate level.

NEED assesses the aspirants’ proficiency in the field of design involving worldview, creativity, general mental ability, sensitivity to environment, and drawing and communication skills.
NEED is only a first step in the selection process for these institutions and therefore, does not guarantee any admissions. The exam is followed by studio tests and personal interviews. However, the process may differ in the consortium partner institutes and candidates need to apply separately in them.
NID provides Graduate Diploma Program in Design (GDPD) – Four Year Intensive Professional Under-graduate Program. It offers following specializations:
Product Design, Furniture & Interior Design, Ceramic & Glass Design
(Under the faculty of Industrial Design)
Graphic Design, Animation Film Design, Film & Video Communication, Exhibition (Spatial) Design
(Under the faculty of Communication Design)
Textile Design
(Under the faculty of Textile, Apparel and Lifestyle Design)
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants who have passed 10+2 or equivalents such as IB/ICSE/AISSCE qualify to apply for NEED. Proficiency in technical and related subjects is desirable. Also, maximum age limit to apply is twenty years (upper age limit is extended by three years for the reserved categories) as on June 1, in the year of application.
Candidates appearing in the final exam of graduation can also apply for NEED, provided they submit all the provisional documents for the qualifying degree during the admissions.
